About This Work
Palimpsest | Angophora costata, Study I From the collection Two Handspans There is something extraordinary about becoming completely transfixed by just two handspans of bark. A surface we might pass a thousand times without noticing becomes an entire landscape of colour, texture, movement and history. Palimpsest takes its name from the ancient practice of writing over a surface while leaving traces of what came before. In the shedding bark of Angophora costata, I see a similar story unfolding. Layers peel away to reveal new colours and textures, while remnants of earlier surfaces linger beneath. Each mark, scar and delicate curl of bark becomes part of the tree's continuing history. The work forms part of Two Handspans, a larger collection of seven enlarged natural history studies exploring the overlooked intricacies of gum tree bark, seaweed and lichen. By magnifying these ordinary fragments, I hope to give them a presence and significance we so rarely afford them in passing. Through delicate layers of watercolour and visible graphite, I explore the relationship between scientific observation and artistic interpretation, allowing the marks of my own hand to sit alongside those left by nature. These works are an invitation to slow down, to look a little longer and to rediscover wonder in the familiar. Perhaps there is something quietly reassuring in the idea that, even when the world feels impossibly vast and complicated, an entire universe of beauty can exist within just two handspans of bark.
About the Artist

Danielle Nash
thereyouarestudioDanielle Nash | There You Are Studio | Artist & Natural History Illustrator Danielle Nash is an Avalon-based artist and natural history illustrator whose practice, There You Are Studio, sits at the intersection of art and science. Working primarily in watercolour, gouache and graphite, Danielle draws inspiration from the rich tradition of scientific illustration, when artists played an essential role in documenting, understanding and revealing the natural world. Combining scientific accuracy with expressive, painterly techniques, she collaborates with scientists and researchers to document and illustrate species, contributing to the discovery and understanding of Australia's extraordinary biodiversity. She is currently working on The ABC of Australian Bees, an illustrated book celebrating the remarkable diversity of Australia's native bees. Her creative practice also extends into music, culture and the arts. As resident artist for acclaimed Australian musician Katie Noonan, and through collaborations with musicians, political figures and other creatives, Danielle enjoys exploring the connections between different forms of artistic expression. The name There You Are Studio is a quiet acknowledgement of Danielle's own journey as an artist. After years of feeling the pull of what contemporary art ought to look like, she found a greater sense of freedom in letting those expectations go and returning to what had always fascinated her: the natural world, scientific discovery and the simple pleasure of making things by hand. Rather than trying to define her work within a particular movement, Danielle allows curiosity to lead, embracing the space between scientific precision and artistic expression. At its heart, her work is simply an invitation to look a little closer. In a world that moves so quickly, where nature is so often relegated to the background of our lives, she hopes to encourage a moment of stillness, curiosity and wonder, reminding us that the extraordinary has been quietly there all along.
